Periodontal Services

The supporting structures of the teeth: the gums and the bone. Treated early, gum disease is reversible. Left alone, it takes the teeth with it.

Periodontics has grown as a field because periodontitis, better known as gum disease, is so common. When gums are irritated or inflamed by prolonged exposure to plaque and toxins they can develop periodontitis: they swell and darken, then begin to pull away from the teeth, leaving pockets. Those pockets fill with tartar, bacteria and plaque, and the condition spreads. Once it reaches the jawbone and the connective tissue, tooth loss is likely.

Scaling and root planing

A highly effective, non-surgical treatment. Scaling removes the build-up of plaque, tartar and toxins from above and below the gum line, reaching the deep spaces that brushing and flossing cannot. Root planing then smooths the rough spots on the root surfaces, so that the build-up is slower to return.

Dental crown lengthening

When the gums are inflamed and swollen they can produce a “gummy” smile. Crown lengthening removes and reshapes the excess gum tissue to expose more of the natural tooth. It restores the look of the smile and also gives access below the gum line so that any damage there can be repaired.

Gingivectomy

The removal of a portion of gum from around a tooth to treat gum disease. The diseased tissue is trimmed away and the remaining gum is reattached with stitches.

Root surface treatment

Where the root surface itself has been affected, it is cleaned and treated directly so that the gum can reattach to a sound surface rather than an infected one.

We encourage patients to seek treatment for gum disease as early as possible. Bleeding when you brush is not normal, and it is the easiest stage to fix.
