One of the nine specialties the American Dental Association recognises, and the one that plans a whole mouth rather than a single tooth.
Prosthodontists are experts in the restoration and replacement of teeth and jaw structures, with expertise in cosmetics, dental implants, crowns, bridges and dentures. On top of four years of dental school, a prosthodontist completes a further three years of training in an ADA-accredited graduate programme, and then has to pass a rigorous set of examinations to become Board Certified.
A prosthodontist leads teams of general dentists, specialists and other healthcare professionals to develop the plan for a case. When a patient is missing one or more teeth, both the function and the appearance of the mouth are compromised: it becomes difficult to speak and to eat, and self-confidence suffers. A prosthodontist plans the rehabilitation of that function using crowns, bridges, a partial prosthesis or dentures.
Dr. Brian Kabcenell is a Board Certified Prosthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics. He is a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists and of the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics, and taught prosthodontics to post-doctoral students and residents for more than twenty years, including a period as Assistant Director of the Division of Advanced Prosthodontics at Montefiore Medical Center. He has been restoring mouths for over thirty-five years.
Dr. Thomas Fuschetto holds a certificate in Advanced Education in Prosthodontics from Stony Brook, and was a dental laboratory technician before he was a dentist, fabricating the porcelain veneers, crowns, bridges and dentures he now prescribes.
